Synesthetic Collage
Project Info: Sp21-PSY-0009-01-Intro Cognitiv & Brain Sciences, Individual Class Project
Project Brief: Creative project related to a topic discussed in a lecture
Project Type: Abstract Collage
Project Timeline: 2 weeks (April 2021)
I did an abstract collage art portraying the neurological condition of synesthesia and illustrated the experiences of people who have different types of synesthesia, inspired by anecdotes that I found online. The collage comprises printed and cut pieces that reflect how synesthetic people experience the world around them, uniquely. Different types of synesthesia include chromesthesia or music-color synesthesia, auditory-tactile synesthesia, number-form synesthesia, lexical-gustatory synesthesia, and number-to-color synesthesia... I further found direct quotes of people who have different types of synesthesia or other common or uncommon examples online and also included interesting quotes from famous artists and some examples from Kevin Mitchell's "Innate."
I cut and combined pieces/illustrations from different magazines. (Tufts Observer issues and Melisma Music Magazine) to form a collage and then matched the quotes to relevant parts/corners. All of the illustrations combine as a whole to reflect "synesthesia" in a vivid and abstract form.
The project was featured in Tufts’ annual Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium: a competition called Art Your Research, in which students submitted artistic interpretations of academic research projects.
